I wasn’t planning on sending Matteo to Preschool… He is smart. I am smart. We will work on things from home, & then he will jump into public school Kindergarten next year.
I’m sure he would have been fine if we had followed that path, but I am also sure that PreK has taught him an incredible amount of things in a short amount of time.
I just had our parent teacher conference, & I was blown away at how much my little four year old boy is doing. I see it on a daily basis at home – sounding out words, telling me the days of the week with ease, & much more. But sitting there at the conference & seeing just how far he has come in a few short months made it so real.
Here is what PreK (& his amazing teacher) has done for him that I would not have been able to do (& yes, it pains me to say that)…
Reading & Writing
My boy is reading & writing. It just amazes me to see how much he is learning! He has a whole journal with pictures & sentences that he sounded out & wrote himself phonetically. His teacher confirmed that this is not his favorite thing to do, but she is able to get him to work on it regularly – something that probably would not be happening at home. He is interested in learning new concepts because that is what the whole classroom is doing. It is a much different (& more effective) environment than mom trying to teach when all of your favorite toys are in the next room.
Independence & Confidence
Matteo has always been very independent & has never lacked in the confidence department either. But being confident with mom by your side is very different than being on your own. Matteo is learning how to put his trust in other authority figure besides mom, & this has been a hard step for him. He prefers to do things on his own rather than ask for help, & he is timid when it comes to other adults. He is learning how to stand up for himself & sort things out with peers.
His Own Thing
Matteo loves that he gets to go to school. He has his teachers, his classroom, his jobs, his classmates. He doesn’t have to deal with his troublemaker little brother while he is there, & he gets to have his own space. He was so proud to show us everything on Family Fun Night – it was adorable.
Each week, each child has a different classroom job. Matteo owns these with pride & takes them very seriously. He is also learning about days, weeks, months, seasons, weather, & more; which he will use every day of his life. When I tried to teach him the days of the week at home, he insisted that every day would be Tuesday to the point where I had to put it away.
Most importantly… He loves it. He looks forward to it & talks about it often.
With Kindergarten being so structured these days, I feel that PreK was a really good choice for him. I am glad that we did it, & I think it will continue to benefit him in the long run.
