Over the summer we eat on-the-go a lot – in the car, at the park, at the pool, on a walk, or just in the backyard. Whether it’s snacks or picnic lunches, I often stuff it in a plastic sandwich baggie, hand it to the boys, & off we go. Unfortunately, this is not the most environmentally friendly method, & after reading through this article – Ways to Think Green from the Day Your Baby is Born – I went on a hunt for cute, eco-friendly, easy to reuse food containers for my kiddos (& myself).
Why Choose to Reuse?
As moms we already have enough on our plates (yes, that’s a lunch pun). We feel like we are always loading the dishwasher, doing laundry, or any of the other daily tasks that have to happen to keep the house running. Often we feel like the convenience & disposability of plastic sandwich baggies & paper bags is a good option, but the fact that they contribute to 32 million tons of plastic waste every year is staggering.
Instead of contributing to that number, there are many products on the market that are a better alternative. They are easy to wash (especially since the dishwasher & washing machine are always running anyway), & they are way cuter than boring plastic bags. They, of course, are more of an investment upfront, but that investment pays off as you continue to use them.
Another benefit of these reusable containers is that your kids can pick out their own styles. Grapes are more fun to eat if they are stored in a Superman bag, & who wouldn’t want to dig into R2D2 for their lunch?? Reusable containers give you the opportunity to talk about these environmental issues with your kids in a way that is relevant to their world, & they can help make a difference from an early age.
Where to Buy Reusable Containers?
I simply went to Google & found tons of options for reusable lunch & snack containers. There are options on specialized sites as well as bigger sites like Amazon & Etsy. You can even go to Pinterest for tutorials on how to make your own reusable sandwich bags.
I’ve compiled some of my favorites below (these aren’t affiliate links… just things I thought were cute & useful):
- DC Comics Reusable Snack Bags
- Pyrus Container Compartments Reusable Lunchboxes
- Star Wars R2D2 Bento Box
- Dabawalla Lunch Bag
- Reusable Sandwich Bag Set
- SoYoung Small Cooler Bag
- Russbe Reusable Snack & Sandwich Bag Set
- GreenPaxx Slim Snack Silicone Food Pouches
- Yummi Pouches
- Fit & Fresh Bento Box with Reusable Ice Pack
Taking these small steps isn’t something to be overlooked. There is always more that we can do, but that shouldn’t paralyze us & prevent us from taking any steps at all. Start small, teach your children about eco-friendly behaviors, & be mindful… those small things add up. Go here for more ideas on how to go green.
