I spend a lot of time on social media, which means that I spend a lot of time looking at pictures of people; & the one thing that has really been standing out to me recently is the lengths that women go to to look great in a picture. We spend hours picking out the perfect outfit & doing our makeup, but that is not nearly the end of it.
If someone is going to take their picture, women turn into contortionists mentally taking note of all of the tiny “flaws.” She knows how to minimize her pointy nose, how to smile so that her eyes don’t squint too much, and how to angle her chin so that the dreaded chin doesn’t appear.
But what do guys do? Do guys even notice? My husband is a paid model part of the time, & I don’t think that even he puts as much thought into his looks during photoshoots as women put into an everyday family snapshot.
Why do we do it? It doesn’t change our actual appearance. People who see us on the street inevitably see “our bad side,” but we are much harsher on ourselves than anyone else is. We are the first to spot things we don’t like about ourselves in pictures while everyone else just sees us – for who we are.
I don’t think that this post will actually change any of our behavior, but if nothing else, it makes for a humorous comparison.
